MIPS, MSUs, Software Groups - IBM z890

Please check the note about mainframe investment

In line with z990 practice, the hardware and software model designators of the z890 are completely separate. There is only one hardware model - the 2086-A04. System performance is determined by the Capacity Setting.

Performance values are given in zSeries Millions of Instructions per Second - zMIPS. These values are only approximately comparable with the MIPS values given for earlier systems because they are based on the performance of the z990 - which uses a markedly different processor design to earlier systems. Correct comparision of an earlier system with a z890 requires factoring in the workload performance differences between the earlier system and the z990. There are other tables on the Internet. There is no single numerical factor that can be applied to make this conversion.

The z990 has both "capacity" and "charging" MSUs defined. The z890 does not define capacity MSUs - the values given here are for charging purposes only. As always, the ultimate references are IBM's own LSPR and MSU tables - both also define Software Groups for the z890, and the latter also defines EWLC Tiers.
