MIPS Values for all sorts of older Machines

It's quite amazing how many times the IBM System/360 architecture and its variants were implemented by various vendors. Even before Amdahl, companies like RCA built the Spectra 70 - sold in the UK as the ICL System/4. Software compatibility is over half a century old - Honeywell's H200 "Liberator" ran IBM 1401 code unmodified. This legacy continues to the present day - IBM's software charges are still defined for these archaic machines and the Schedule that IBM sometimes attaches to its contracts reads like a transcription of the Rosetta stone.

Most machines don't have performance figures available - some were never built and most shipped only in handfuls. Some are also simple rebrands of others. As always, if you know something we don't ...

• Ippolito claimed 1.20 MIPS for the 4446 - it was actually two 4443s built into the same frame but not connected in any way other than sharing power supplies. It was referred to irreverently as the "pushmipullu" and was presented by Itel at Systems 79 in Munich. The gag was to get several sets of dangerously young twin girls dressed in incredibly short shorts to walk around the halls under double umbrellas, each with two handles. Sharing power supplies is an interesting way to increase your data centre's reliance on a singe point of failure. None were ever sold. The 4443 was rebranded by Itel and sold at least once (in Finland) but proved incapable of handling MVS' channel programmes and caused no end of support problems.
